When you sit down to play poker, live or online, you need to be
prepared to play. You must be physically and mentally prepared to
play. Here are somethings that I do or suggest you do to prepare
yourself for poker.
Eating: I like to eat about 1.5 to 2 hours before I play. I also suggest eating good food that agrees with your system. For me I like to eat salads or pasta. I suggest avoiding fast food and other junk foods as they might affect your thinking with the sugars and chemicals they contain. Also don't stuff yourself and make sure you are well hydrated.
Mental Focus: Be ready to play. Don't go playing poker upset or worried about things. If you just had a fight with the spouce, don't play. If you don't feel good, don't play. If you have things on your mind and are distracted, don't play. All these little things affect your play.
Alcohol: Don't drink if you want to take poker seriously. It affects your mind making you looser and not able to focus.
Exercise: Before a large tournament I suggest exercise or yoga. It relieves stress and relaxes the body.
Bring only what you can afford to lose: There are times even good players have bad nights. The best thing you can do is bring limited money to play so you know when to stop when your beat. I usually bring $500 when I play 10/20 limit. If I lose it I go home.
Feel comfortable with your game: Don't play limits or games you don't feel comfortable with or don't know.
