Texas Hold’em Strategy - Evaluating Your Sit and Go Statistics

Sit-and-gos make up a large percentage of online texas holdem poker activity, and with good reason. They are fun, easy and give you the poker tournaments experience without requiring an unreasonable amount of your time. It’s likely that if you play online poker, you’ve enjoyed a sit-and-go from time to time. However, have you ever taken the time to evaluate your sit-and-go statistics? If not, read on.

Why Should I Evaluate My Sit-and-Go Statistics?

You should evaluate your stats to learn. You should be keeping records of all your poker activity, and sit-and-gos are no exception. Evaluating your sit-and-go statistics will help you identify leaks in your game, show you your strengths and weaknesses and help you make an honest assessment of your poker skills.

What Statistics Should I Be Evaluating?

First, you should be evaluating your win rate. You can keep a tally of how many first, second and third cashes you make for every ten sit-and-gos you played. Keep statistics on different buy-ins distinct, as the level of play may change with changing buy-ins. One of the things you are trying to determine is the level of buy-in you should play. You may be surprised at how well or how poorly you really are doing.

You might also evaluate your in-game poker stats. How many flops are you seeing, how many pots are you winning at the showdown, how many pots you are winning without a showdown, etc.

How Should I Evaluate My Statistics?

You can do it by hand, although this may be time consuming and frustrate other players if you take the time to do it while playing. You should be aware though; there are many poker software programs that can compile all the statistics you need. There are not only programs that compile all the information about you and your opponents in every hand you play, but also programs that track your general success (and that of your opponents!) in sit-and-go tournaments.

What Should I Do Once I’ve Evaluated My Statistics?

If you find your win rate is lower than you thought it was, or is in fact a loss rate, your first step should probably be to drop down to a lower buy-in. If you don’t find that to be the solution, there are plenty of online poker schools, poker books and poker programs that will teach you the finer points of sit-and-gos to help you improve your game. When trying to improve your game, examine your other statistics, and if you can, compare them to that of winning players. If you find your winning opponents are seeing more or fewer flops than you, for example, you may get a key clue as to whether you should tighten or loosen up your game.
